Coweta County School Board Begins 2019-2020 Budget Process

The Coweta County Board of Education previewed the school system’s upcoming 2019-2020 budget, at their regular meeting on May 14.

The Board will hold two budget workshops - on May 21, at 6:30 p.m. and on May 28, at 6:30 p.m. - at the 237 Jackson Street Board of Education office in Newnan. Both workshops will review the proposed budget for the school system's 2020 Fiscal Year. Budget information may be viewed on the school system’s website here (scroll down to “Budget Information”).

The school system operates on a fiscal year running from July 1 through June 30 of the following year. Following the May 21 and 28 budget workshops, the school board expects to consider tentative approval of an FY2020 budget at its June 11 regular board meeting, followed by final approval on June 25.

On Tuesday, the school board reviewed a summary of projected revenues of and expenses for the school system’s anticipated FY 2020 budget. The budget figures reviewed at Tuesday’s meeting includes a raise of $3,000 for employees paid on the school system’s certified schedule, a 2.5 percent increase in pay for classified employees, and salary steps for certified and classified employees, where due.

The $219,921,054 budget also would fund new teaching positions system-wide, would fully fund an anticipated increase in the school system’s contributions to the state Teacher Retirement System, would provide an increase in the school system’s matching contributions to the Communities In Schools program, and would otherwise maintain the current student calendar of 180 instructional days and the current instructional program for students.

Tuesday’s preview of Coweta County School’s FY 2020 school budget covered anticipated General Fund revenues and expenditures only, which provide employee salaries and benefits (90.84% of the total) and basic operating costs including utilities, maintenance, instructional materials and similar costs.
